Curriculum Intent
PSHE at Toner Avenue is taught in a “spiral” style curriculum through the One Life scheme. This curriculum has been developed through an understanding of our pupils, community, families and their individual and specialist needs. We have used data from Hebburn North and South Tyneside (Hebburn north and Hebburn South) Ward profiles to provide a deeper understanding of the issues which are prominent within our community. E.g Drug and Alcohol abuse/addiction, obesity, smoking etc.. This has allowed us to tailor our curriculum to best suit our pupils. At Toner Avenue PSHE links to the curriculum intent as it provides pupils with the opportunity to interpret the world around them and their own community whilst supporting the development of their own individual beliefs and experiences.
Curriculum Implementation
We follow the One Life programme for PSHE which is constantly being adapted, reviewed and developed by teachers and subject leaders. We have based decisions on RSE on the needs of our pupils and our community. We have used the health figures for Hebburn North and Hebburn South to cultivate aspects of our curriculum. These figures give us context and show us which issues are the most prevalent in our community such as obesity, alcohol and drug abuse/addiction, smoking addiction etc…
What is RSE?
This is the relationships and sex education which we already teach at Toner. Some elements of the curriculum have been added and adapted to incorporate some areas of the curriculum which we did not previously cover. The One Life scheme of work as it stands fulfils the demands of RSE. As a school we promote this by ensuring that all pupils have access to this curriculum and protected characteristics are understood and supported. We do not limit any areas of our curriculum to ensure that it provides pupils with the opportunity to interpret the world around them and their own community whilst supporting the development of their own individual beliefs and experiences.
Curriculum Impact
The PSHE/RSE curriculum works in cohesion with and is supported by the school’s wider policies. This is evident in our continued promotion of British Values such as democracy, equality, diversity and respect for British institutions, rules and laws and work on personal development across school which is being developed as we move forward.
