“To inform and motivate pupils to aspire high by learning to live in tomorrow’s world.”
Careers lead – Miss L Almond
Careers Intent
The intent of our curriculum is to give children the knowledge and skills that pupils need in order to take advantage of opportunities and experiences of later life. We also intend to build on aspirations and motivate children to be the best they can be whilst dealing with stereotypes by exposing children to a range of role models and careers. For older pupils, we aim to show ‘the bigger picture’ allowing children to see the importance of how their foundation years can impact their future opportunities.
Careers Implementation
The process involves helping children acquire knowledge and experience. We base our intentions on the Gatsby Benchmarks. They define what world class careers provision in education looks like and provide a clear framework for organising the careers provision at Toner Avenue. We do this by:
- Use of a careers policy.
- Regular staff training and updates. .
- Governor involvement.
- Project involvement.
- Careers fairs.
- Each child has one career visit every half term linked to their specific curriculum and creates a career profile for that job which follows them through school to track aspirational progress. This allows children to see the importance of every subject and see how that knowledge can be used in “real life”.
- Experiences not linked to the curriculum but link to wider life, such as business and enterprise.
- Staff network with members of the local community to organise visits both internally and externally. This ensures school LMI (labour market information is kept up to date and children acquire the skills needed to be successful without having to move away.
Careers Impact
- Children will have a deeper understanding of a variety of careers. They will understand the importance of equality of diversity. Children at Toner Avenue will have acquired a strong foundation of transferable skills which local employers feel people are currently lacking. Children will feel aspirational and positive about their future. Because of this, children will understand the importance of their subjects in school resulting in a rise in academic attainment and a belief that they can be whoever and whatever they would like to be when they are older.
