Year 5 were so excited to launch our Mars rover competition today. After learning about Space in Science and writing descriptions of our own Mars rovers in English, we are using TinkerCAD to design our new Mars rovers in Computing. The top 3 designs from each class will be printed into a model using a 3D printer – we can’t wait to see the final products!
In Science Year 5 have been learning about Earth and Space and therefore we were excited to take part in Mars Hour today! We are becoming experts as we are designing rovers with programmable Lego in DT and writing about Curiosity in English. We enjoyed taking part in the Robokids activity to find out even more about what life might be like on Mars. We found out that the first person to visit Mars is thought to be in primary school now, perhaps it will be one of our pupils!
Yesterday, children were taught how to do CPR. They were absolutely brilliant and I am so very proud of them. – Miss Almond
Today we were able to spend our attendance stars from Autumn 2!
We had so much to choose from and enjoyed spending our well earned stars. Did you know we get a star for every full week we have in school? We were able to choose prizes such as; superhero masks, rubbers, zip bracelets, cars and so much more!
We are so excited for the attendance trolley to come around next time but for now, Miss Little has to rest her feet!
They’re here! The long awaited Thurston pictures!
It has been fantastic hearing about the adventures of our explorers, the amazing activities and that age old right of passage… jumping off the jetty!
As you’ll see by a lot of our pictures, if you give a 10 year old a camera, a selfie is inevitable!
We hope everyone had an amazing adventure, the pictures look brilliant!

In Year 5 we have really enjoyed reading and writing about Robot Girl by Malorie Blackman and The Tempest by William Shakespeare. The children have produced excellent writing, well done everyone!
Today we virtually welcomed a Viking visitor to Toner! We learned all about Viking jobs, games, trade and language. We then had the opportunity to ask questions and found out that Viking children would not have gone to school, they’d be married by twelve and sadly die at around forty! We were so proud of the children because they listened so carefully and asked very interesting questions. Thank you to Ms McCabe for organising.
This week, a little later than we had hoped, we were able to go to our attendance shop. This attendance shop was on wheels and came to our classrooms which was super fun!
We were all so excited to be able to pick our prizes which ranged from superhero masks, squishies, snap bands and much more! Our most popular prize was definitely the slinky!
Jeff Kinney author visit – In Year 5 we were lucky to be involved in a Virtual Author visit with Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid books) last week. The children really enjoyed hearing about his writing process and how the front covers are designed. His books have flown off the shelves in our library and I know his new book has been added to Christmas lists!
Well done to our wonderful Stars of the Week this week.
