We have been musical maestros today in our science work… we all had a go at playing the cello. We were learning about how the instrument makes sound and how we can alter the pitch. It was not as easy as we thought it would be but there are some budding string players among us! Here are some of our findings!

“The thickness of the strings affects the sound because the thicker the string, the lower the pitch,” Lilia

“You can change the pitch of the cello by putting your fingers on the fingerboard. When you press down it shortens the bit of the string that can vibrate so the pitch goes up. When you pluck the strings it vibrates and when you use the bow is also vibrates the string.” Jordan

“The cello has 4 strings – the thin ones make the higher pitched noises and the thick ones make lower pitched sounds.” Lucy
