Today, year 2 had a maths challenge to solve.
Read the challenge below:
They shared them out evenly and had one left over.
Just as they had finished sharing them their friends Kishan, Hayley and Paul came along. They wanted some lollies too so the children shared them out again between all of them. This time they had two lollies left over.
How many lollies could there have been in the bag?”
So we started by completing a table and using cubes as lollies and the same number of children. We then remembered we had to add on the two that were left over. We decided to work systematically so gave each child 1 lolly, then 2 lollies and so on.
Matthew managed to work out lots of the possibilities up to when the children had 17 lollies each!
We spotted a pattern, the numbers were odd then even
Amie, Lewis, Luke and Heidi
We spotted that the ones digits were 2 then 7 each time.
Matthew, Sydney, Lacey
I also wanted to show off my maths tablecloth!
The children would like to know if anyone can beat Matthew in finding 17 possibilities? Let us know in the comments.
Well done year 2!
