Our Eco warriors have been very busy through January and February! We have been learning all about birds and how they survive the plummeting temperatures throughout the winter months.
Mandy very kindly provided us with some binoculars and we went bird watching on the school yard to see what bird species we have around our school. After we had identified the birds, we went inside to make some disgusting (but delicious for birds) fat balls. We made these from pine cones, lard, seeds and dried meal worms. These help to provide birds with a source of food when the ground is frosty and hard to search and I am very happy to report that they have all been eaten!
This week, we learnt all about different types of bird nests and discussed the materials that they use to keep warm. We then made some amazing bird boxes, which we will (very politely) ask Mr Bryson to hang on some of the trees.
The bird boxes were quite tricky to assemble and we had to be very careful when using hammers and nails, but I think you’ll agree that the finished work is very impressive!
Mandy and the Durham Wildlife Trust very kindly provided us with some brilliant resources to help us encourage more wildlife into the new Toner Avenue grounds!
