Information for Y6 Parents

19th March 2020A Feeney

Dear Parents/Carers,

As many of you will be aware, schools are due to be closing on Friday afternoon & the children will not be sitting their SATs this summer term. As children do, they have many questions that unfortunately, I just do not have the answers to at this current time.

Myself, Miss Bainbridge & Mrs Mcbarron could not be more proud of each and everyone of our Y6 children, we have been fortunate enough to spend 2 years teaching this fantastic year group and we are bursting with pride at how far they have come- not only academically but socially and emotionally, they truly have been a joy for us to teach. We hope to see you all, happy and healthy, very soon. In the meantime, school work will soon be uploaded into our Google Classroom & keep an eye on the school website for regular updates.

For those who have not yet received a log in for Google Classroom, please follow the following instructions:

-Go onto the school website and in the top right had corner click ‘Login’

-Usernames take the format of your child’s first name followed by the first initial of their first name (all lower case)

Example: joeb

And the universal password is: password, children will be asked to change this when they log on.

-Along the bar at the top, select the Google Classroom icon (the green image with the outline of people) and enter the following codes, dependent on whose class you are in:

Miss Feeney’s class: u64tamu

Miss Bainbridge’s class: 4mjg5px

(Please join your CLASS not your set)

Inside the Google Classroom you will start to find folders of work across the curriculum areas & children will be able to communicate with teaching staff should they have any issues.

Thank you for your continued support at this trying time & most importantly stay safe.

All the best,

Miss Feeney & the Y6 Team

γευστικός! Greek food tasting in year 4!

1st October 2019L Tait

Last Friday, year 4 had the opportunity to taste an array of authentic Greek foods as part of our big topic question “What makes a good civilisation?” where we have been looking at Ancient Greece.

Some were a renowned success:

Down in one!

Thumbs up for Greek cuisine!

Very tasty Greek salad!

and some didn’t go down so well…

Not an olive fan!

Olives were not a hit in 4LT!

Still unsure…

Despite some sour tastes (and faces) we really enjoyed trying Greek olives, halloumi, Greek salad, pitta bread and Greek yogurt.

Miss Tait

Year 3 Letter Writing – Monkton Community Woodland

15th February 2019d tosh

After our visit, earlier this week, to Monkton Community Woodland, the Year 3 children have been disturbed by the amount of rubbish they saw.

They have decided to write letters to Groundwork South Tyneside to express their concerns about it. They also offered their support to the volunteers in organising different actions to improve the situation.

We will keep you informed of any developments…Watch this space!

Year 3 Cinema Visit – The Kid who would be King

13th February 2019d tosh

Last Friday, Year 3 were lucky to be invited to take part in a advanced screening of The Boy who would be King as part of the School’s involvement in the annual Into Film Festival.

The film was an excellent introduction to our upcoming work on myths and legends, as it retold the story of King Arthur, Excalibur and his battles with Morgana Pendragon.

The children had a great time and they were, as always, a credit to the School. Tracey, from Just Exec Travel even contacted Mr Arthur to say ‘Thank you for your recent Coach hire booking to Sunderland Empire Cinema on Friday 08th February, the driver feedback was excellent and said it was a delight to transport such well behaved children and friendly organised staff’. Well done kids.

Year 3 making Skeleton Models

13th February 2019d tosh

In Year 3 we have been investigating what who we are and what our place in the World is. We decided to make a model of our skeleton. We worked in pairs to take measurements of different parts of our bodies, recording the information in a table. We then halved each measurement to make a smaller model of ourselves.

We cut strips of paper the correct length, writing on it which bone in our body it was, then using split pins and staples we assembled our mini me skeleton.

We all had a lot of fun and finished by decorating them.

Orienteering Adventurers!

5th November 2018L Tait

To celebrate National Outdoor Classroom Day on the 1st of November some very lucky year 4 pupils were able participate in an orienteering experience. During the afternoon they were able to read a map, find magnetic North and navigate a park independently using their map to complete a challenge.

Lots of fun was had and each child was able to develop a range of skills, some of us had never seen a compass before!

Take a look at some of the great photos from the day.

Safer Internet Day 2017

By s cox10th February 2017

We celebrated Safer Internet Day on Tuesday, with lots of different activities.

Our desktop background needs refreshing. So every child was given the chance to design a new ‘Safer Internet’ background. The competition entries are still coming in, but keep your eyes peeled for when our student council choose the winning entry.

Here is a little snap shot of what some of the classes got up to.

In year one, Miss Jones’ class read the story ‘Chicken Clicking’ and talked about how to be safe online. They finished their day with a safer internet team quiz! Check out their photos below.

In year 2, we designed our desktop backgrounds. We also sorted photographs with our partners to decide whether we could post them online or not. It was brilliant hearing the discussions around their choice:

‘Well that can’t go online as it gives away personal information’.

We also wrote an alternative ending to Chicken Clicking. We had to make sure that Chicken Clicking followed the E-Safety rules.

Here are 2 much safer alternative (E-Safe) endings from Shaun and Roman.

Chicken Clicking went online to buy a hover board but first she asked her Mam and Dad. Her Mam and Dad said ‘Let’s have a look’.

She signed up for WhatsApp. Chicken Clicking made up her made up name and typed a random age. Doing all of that made her stay safe. Shaun Y2SC

Chicken Clicking went online to buy a mini sports car but she stopped to think. Then she told her Mum. Mum said let’s have a look. She signed up on her SnapChat. Then she made up a name. Then she made up a picture so she didn’t look the same. Roman Y2SC

Year 4 used the iPads to make an ‘All About Me’ profile, without giving away any of their personal information! Take a look at some of them below, see if you can guess who’s it is!

Finally to all of the parents and carers reading this, the NSPCC and O2 have teamed up to offer advice, workshops and can change settings on phones and tablets to ensure your child stays safe online. For more information, follow this link: https://www.nspcc.org.uk/fighting-for-childhood/about-us/partners/nspcc-o2-online-safety-partnership/

Well done to everyone at Toner, I am so impressed with the children’s knowledge about using the internet safely.

Also thank you to all of the teachers and support staff for taking part in this important day! Your efforts mean our children are super safe online!

Miss Cox
