Year Five welcomed Father Jeremiah, a Benedictine monk, from St.Vincent Arch Abbey, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA, yesterday afternoon. His visit coincided with their current R.E topic of Northern Saints. He talked to the children about how Christianity returned to Northumbrian Britain in the early 7th century, when King Oswald regained his sub-kingdoms of Bernicia and Deira now known as Northumbria, establishing his church at Bamburgh with missionary monks from Iona.
He discussed monastic life in the early years and how it compares to present day. He told them that there have been many changes but Monastries remain as Centres for learning.
The children asked many questions and learned lots of facts about Monks and their everyday lives.
